What Do You Want Write It Down!
What Do You Want Write It Down! I have a very specific goal for 2019. By the end of today, it will be written down, and taped on my wall (or monitor) so I can see it every single day. It will guide my thinking and my decisions. It will help me stay focused. It will help me avoid being wishy-washy and focusing on things I shouldnt focus on. The written goal will be my mini vision board. Ill see it multiple times a day, and it will be in my mind all the time. I want YOU to write down what you are after. Dont just write: A job! Write something very specific, like: I will have a job as a product manager in a funded, healthy, and growing high-tech company. I will add considerable value to my team, the customers, and the company, and I will have growth opportunities. I will make $______, and have a great work-life balance. I wouldnt make it too long, but you can see the level of detail that Im after. I have not done this much over the last 13 years since I started JibberJobber. But this year is different. I have goals that I need to focus on, and I will keep them central to my thinking because they will be on my wall very soon. And you? What Do You Want Write It Down! 4 Tips for Bringing Your Most Professional Self to an Interview I spent a few days this week doing staffing for a new business. Some interviews were scheduled, some were open call style. I donât know if Iâm getting cynically critical or appropriately more selective, but I am finding that the more staffing Iâm involved in, the narrower my window for the acceptability of certain behaviors becomes. I was shocked by the number of applicants who came in looking disheveled, without a resume in hand, or unclear about what position they were even showing up for. Take these tips to shine even brighter in your next interview. Look Your Best It doesnât matter what kind of position youâre applying for, clean up. While an interviewer cannot comment on your appearance, it doesnât go unnoticed. Show the person youâre meeting and the position youâre looking to obtain some respect. You donât have to put on makeup if thatâs not your thing, but donât look like you rolled out of bed and through the door of the office as an afterthought. Curb the âTude While culture fit is becoming an increasingly important part of the interview process, this still means you need to bring some respect to the table. The way you sit, talk, and exude certain aspects of your personality can make or break an interview. This doesnât mean you have to become stodgy and straight-laced in fact, it is critically important to let your true self shine thought but be courteous and speak professionally. The way you behave in an interview shows someone how they can expect you to interact with customers and coworkers. A bad or pompous attitude wonât get you anywhere. Come Prepared At a minimum, bring several hard copies of your resume. It doesnât hurt to also bring a copy of your cover letter, your portfolio, and any other supporting documents that might be relevant to the position. Donât assume that because you emailed your resume it got printed. If you have time, research the company and the requirements for similar positions. Have questions ready. The level of your preparedness for the interview tells the person assessing you a lot about how you are as a person. Be Honest Donât accept a callback if you decide a company or position isnât right for you. An interviewer might be disappointed to lose a shot at your talents, but will appreciate you not wasting their time. Your disinterest in a position might not show in those interviews, but if you take a job you donât really want, it will be noticed in your work ethic right away.

How To Break Bad Habits Within Your Team Bad habit #1: Sleeping on the job! We all have bad habits, be they things we do consciously, or even unconsciously. Some of them dont warrant a lot of scrutiny, and we can still live our lives reasonably well regardless. On the other hand, there are some bad habits that are detrimental. In our personal lives, these can include smoking, drinking too much, and gambling. In business, there are other bad habits that can prove harmful too. So, when talking about bad habits within your team, we are thinking about some of the following: Poor time-keeping, from arriving to work late, to handing in projects after deadlines have ceased. Time-management is an issue, and productivity will take a nosedive as a consequence. Spreading negativity around the workplace, be that gossiping about others, or telling lies, for any number of reasons. As a result, the overall mood of the workplace will change for the worse, especially when some of these matters become personal. Becoming distracted by things other than work. From engaging in too much office banter to spending time on social media, your employees may be doing anything but what they are supposed to be doing. Making simple mistakes at work, that if left to continue, may cause issues down the line. As examples, this might include using wrong spellings and implementing the wrong grammar in email and marketing communications. The employee may not be aware they are making these mistakes, but your clients may be. You can probably add more bad habits to that list, especially if you are guilty of some of them yourself, or you have noticed them within your workplace. So, what should you do about the problem? How can you break bad habits within your team? Focus on the following three areas. Bring in the professionals to help you. By hiring a business consulting firm, you will have the wisdom and experience of a team who can identify issues that you may not have picked up on yourself. They will determine any problem areas and give tips on how to improve your teams performance. You may be guilty of a few bad habits yourself, so be prepared to eat humble pie when these are brought to your attention. Confront issues head-on. If you spot any bad habits, dont assume they will magically disappear with time. If anything, they will get worse, so you need to break the cycle early on. Reprimand those team members who lie and gossip. Find out why your team members are late to work, or why they miss deadlines. If there are mistakes being made, guide your team members into better practices or pay for training to build their skill set. Be it a performance review or a staff meeting, do something rather than nothing, for any bad habit you notice. Offer incentives. While there are times you will need to come down hard on your employees, you should also offer positives. You can improve your workforce by offering rewards for work well done, and completed ahead of time. This way, you are giving them the incentive to stop any behaviour that is causing a problem with their productivity. Let them know how their bad habits are hindering the business too. By showing them the error of their ways, and by letting them know the positives behind breaking their bad habits, you will give them further incentive. Are there bad habits within your team?
